The reprinted New York Times article doesn’t mention an important resource for Washington residents: The Washington ABLE Savings Plan. This program allows parents and other family members to fund a special type of account for a child with disabilities to use for their living expenses or medical needs.
Funds in these accounts, up to $100,000, are exempt from the asset means testing requirement for Medicaid and certain other low-income programs. The plans are easy to set up, without the added expense of attorney fees.
